The Best Places to Eat and Drink in Scottsville
James River Brewery
When you're in Central Virginia, it can seem as if you can't drive five minutes down a country road without passing a micro-brewery. We are fortunate that the very best one is located right on Valley Street in Scottsville. You might suspect that we're biased given their logo is literally a batteauman, but I can honestly attest there's not a better place to have a beer in the state. From the exceptional quality of its beer to the local watering hole vibe, this establishment is the beating heart of Scottsville, and don't think a trip into town is complete without it!

Mr. Z's BBQ
While you're at James River Brewing, there's a good chance there will also be Mr. Z's BBQ food truck parked outside. This high-quality operation serves up excellent Texas-style barbecue that's even better when washed down with a cold beer. Whether you're looking for pulled pork or chicken, St. Louis ribs, or dry-rubbed wings, Mr. Z's is certain to put a smile on your face!

Tavern on the James
Without question, Tavern on the James is a Scottsville institution. Located right on the corner of Valley and Main, the Tavern has you covered when seeking American comfort food. The burgers are great, so are the steaks, and no surprise, my personal favorite is the Riverboat. A half-pound of blended round steak perched upon merlot mashed potatoes and covered in Swiss cheese, mushrooms, and onions. It's probably not the meal to eat if you're headed for an active afternoon.

Baine's Books and Coffee
Every charming small town needs a good coffee shop, and Baine's adds so much to Scottsville in the form of a solid cup of Joe as well as a cultural meeting place. Most mornings, they also provide some breakfast options, including satisfying biscuits and gravy and home-cooked queches. I highly recommend stopping in for refueling and, while you're there, perusing their selection of Scottsville books. Believe it or not, this town of 500 residents has had multiple books written about its history and character.

Baked on the James
Right across the street from the Tavern sits Baked on the James, Scottsville's sweet spot. If you like cup cakes you are spoiled for choice at this boutique bakery; they literally have a rotating menu of 12 different flavors every day they’re open. Maple bacon, peach bourbon streusel, and cosmic brownie cookie dough are a few of my favorites (though I could continue). If you're more of a cheesecake person, I highly recommend grabbing a slice; trust me, this is not something you'll regret.
